Zero Waste Month: The Kickoff Conversation

Each October, #ZeroWasteMonth offers us the chance to slow down and ask an important question: how much of what we throw away really has to be trash? For some of us, the journey toward “zero waste” began with a single habit such as switching to reusable grocery bags, carrying a water bottle, or composting kitchen scraps. For others, it started with seeing just how much waste our households or businesses create every day and deciding there had to be a better way.

Zero Waste Month's Kickoff Conversation invites us to come together in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities to talk about what zero waste really means. The challenge is to spark a conversation with others and help them get started. Remember, zero waste is not about perfection. It’s about intention and action, no matter how small.

The idea of “zero waste” can feel overwhelming to many people at first, as if you have to eliminate all trash from your life overnight. In reality, it’s a journey. Each step reduces waste, conserves resources, and helps build a healthier planet. When we compost food scraps, we keep methane-producing organics out of the landfill and return nutrients to the soil. When we repair and reuse items instead of buying new, we reduce demand for raw materials and cut down on pollution from manufacturing and shipping. When businesses take action, their choices ripple outward to employees, customers, and suppliers, magnifying their impact.

One of the most powerful things about Zero Waste Month is the sense of shared effort. Around the world, cities, business communities, neighbors, schools, and organizations are coming up with creative ways to rethink waste by hosting clothing swaps, organizing repair cafés, and running educational events. When we share what we are doing, we inspire others to join in.

So, as we begin this year’s Zero Waste Month, we invite you to reflect on your own journey. How did you get started? What changes felt easiest, and which ones were the hardest? What’s one new step you’d like to try this month?
